If your goal is to conquer the chaos and clutter in your truck, we’re here to help! Hyndman has recently partnered with professional organizers ( to help us create a framework for keeping our trucks organized.

Truck drivers spend most of their time in their trucks, surrounded by paperwork and any other home supplies that they need while on the road. Creating a home for items that utilizes the most space in your truck is essential.

The professional organizers used their innovative H.E.A.R.T. process as a standard to conventional organization techniques.

Strap on your seatbelts and hold onto your trucker hats while we apply the H.E.A.R.T. system to our trucks:

H – Handle & Sort

Take all the items out and place them in front of you so that you can get a sense of everything in your truck. This will be the worst looking stage in the H.E.A.R.T. system as everything will be out on display, but remember – it looks worse, before it gets better.

Once everything is out for you to see, group the similar items categorically. For example, group tools, paperwork, hygiene essentials, food, etc.


E – Evaluate

At this stage, your focus is on organizing your items from most important to least important. Decide what you can live without and toss it! Once observing your items, ask yourself “When was the last time I’ve used this?”, it will allow you to get a sense of importance of the items. Assign product categories in different zones, this will allow you to get a better understanding of where to store items for the next step in the H.E.A.R.T. system!


A – Assign a Home

Once you’ve done your assessment of what to keep, toss, donate, you need to make a decision on where to place your items. This will allow you to create a home for every category and influence you to put things away and not leave them sitting out.

At this step, we focus on 3 categories:

Prime storage – items that you use on the regular and that need to be easily accessed.

Secondary storage – items that are used less often, but that you want to be easily accessible.

Archival storage – old items that are needed infrequently, to be placed up high or down low in harder to reach spots.


R – Restore Order

At this step, we decide on what containers to use, and the most important part – labeling! Containers are a critical part of the process, as they section items into categories and ensure that everything has a home. Without sectioning off items by category, you allow things to feel scattered, this is what we’re trying to solve! Avoid using lids on the containers, as this will be a hinderance in putting things back in their appropriate spot.

Labeling shelves and containers is also the second important part in this process, as it forces you to return items to their categorically assigned homes. Label the shelves and the containers within the shelves to ensure that everything is neatly organized in their spot.


T – Tune-up

At this stage, after you’ve lived with the H.E.A.R.T. system for a few days, you’ll realize the tweaks that need to be made to improve the efficiency of your organizational system. You might adjust the homes of certain items after you find that you’re using them more frequently.

The most important aspect of this part is to put your items back into their assigned spot once they’ve been used. This will allow you to maintain the H.E.A.R.T. system and enjoy your clutter-free space!


In conclusion, this method can be applied to your truck or your home. The more practice you have in your daily life utilizing the H.E.A.R.T. methodology, the more trained you’ll become in adhering to the principles.
