A little about Jeff Bilkey Driver Manager, Wroxeter Terminal

What were you doing before you became a DM?

Before I was working at Hyndman, I worked as a cabinet maker. In 1998, I was a Shipper & Receiver for Hyndman in Toronto for six years before becoming a DM. Even though I am not a cabinet maker anymore, I still like to build and do crafts at home.

Did you always want to become a DM?

To be honest at the beginning I did not. As a Shipper and Receiver, I did my own thing, but now I love what I am doing as a DM.

What do you like most about being a DM?

For me, it is the personal interaction with the drivers and fleet. I treat every driver as a person and try to make their day as positive as possible. I do my best to help them with their needs, help them get their home time, and get their miles. I know all 58 of my drivers and try to create a positive interaction with them and my peers. I love doing what I am doing.

How long have you been working at Hyndman as a DM?

Overall, I have been at Hyndman for 20 years. I have worked for 14 years as a DM at Hyndman and 6 years as a Shipper & Receiver.

How has the trucking industry changed?

The border crossing process has changed a lot. Drivers used to do all the paperwork. When I came in we did the paperwork. Now with the e-logs it has completely changed. Overall, the industry changes on a dime. It’s important to make sure drivers are happy, and everything is being delivered on time. It is like a well-oiled machine; the machine must be oiled for it to work.

What is your typical schedule?

A typical day is waking up at 4:30 am. My sixteen-year-old cat normally gets me up at that time. My morning paper is my blackberry. I drink coffee and read my blackberry, so I can become aware of what’s going on. That way, when I get to work, I am up to speed. When I arrive to work at 6am, it is quiet and I can get a lot done. During the day, I spend time updating the trucks and making sure that they are running on time.

When do you find that you’re the busiest?

It depends, but Monday and Wednesday are my busiest days. Coming to work after the weekend, there is a lot going on. During the weekend I like to flag important emails on my blackberry. On Fridays we pre-plan the trucks to ensure that everything is covered.
